4 SECRETS Top Leaders You Follow WON’T TELL YOU
1000% motivation is not enough. The finish line will always be blurry if we haven’t figured out the worst enemy ahead.
In contrast, NO motivation means ONE thing. It means that the level of how we are deeply connected on the outcome is shallow. If it’s not that deep it is easier not to start.
It seems that motivation is not enough and yet it means little in regard to following our goals.
So why success for other comes easy, they can easily manage starting a company, finish a dream project constantly, write a timeless book, maintain a great relationship, build a family, exercise religiously, and boost their days with the career that they really love?
The 4 Golden Rules On Achieving
“When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don’t adjust the goals, adjust the action steps.” — Confucius
We’ve tested some of our ideal goal once. The more important a goal is the more we think it’s difficult to achieve. After trying a couple of times and ending without result we always end up saying “Well, I guess that wasn’t meant for me...” We tend to validate our conclusion to be true if the result is not like we’re expecting.
I believe at some point we already achieved some of results we want in life. We might have the best wife in the world, wonderful kids. We might already have strong muscles and continue with our healthy lifestyle.
Now we must see the clear difference why you cannot achieve meaningful goals in other areas of your life. Your family needs a secure future too, your healthy body is eager to be a constant achiever, so it’s normal to aim more. If you’ve already achieved once you can definitely achieve in other areas too. We just need to see the patterns and discover the rules behind it. A rule where the effectivity is defined by the result.
“No one should ever wonder what it is that you do all day. It should emanate loudly and clearly from what you produce.” — Ryan Holiday
Any achievement is a reflection of the level of discipline a person constantly applied each day. Establishing these 4 rules will play an important role how you can be a constant achiever. The last and most important rule(number 4) will test your imagination and if you do it — it will make you not just start but stick on whatever goal you think is truly important in your life. It will transform you to a constant FINISHER.
But before we proceed on these 4 rules on achieving, I want you to take a look on this short clip first, spoiler alert! after finishing the clip — it will provoked your thoughts to be a LOT stronger compare to 5 minutes ago; see how the message will resonates deep into your soul!
1. Start With Your Deepest Reason Of Doing
Why a great author can finish a timeless book?
Is it nature given? A luck? A gifted talent? What made him show up everyday? At some point, did he also felt like quitting? How did he manage to continue and finish something valuable to the world?
His mind is no different than anyone else. He breathe the same air, he might be eating almost the same food as everyone. Opportunity might be present around him compare to others, but in today’s internet age, opportunities were almost equally scattered. But what made him to pursue starting and eventually finished a timeless book?
He discovered something early on. He found his deepest reason of doing, and it is not to buy his dream house or a luxurious car after selling millions of copies, or being globally famous and signing book cover in front of thousands of people. INSTEAD — He simply wants his words travel the world. His great idea to be seen by everybody and change lives. He found his deepest reason of doing.
You have to make time to analyze yourself, break your routine to stop and ask yourself, “for this goal that I’m aiming — what is my deepest reason of doing it?” If a simple personal goal can’t move a finger, your reason must be shallow.
Every person needs to discover his deepest reason of doing. Each person has it unique in them. Once discovered, that’s the start.
You will be braver than before. You will discover the needed skills to continue forward, and you will start to learn how to get there. You will also search for tools and solutions along the way.
You will start to give no other option for yourself than to accomplish your deepest reason of doing after you read on the next rule. It will create a momentum that requires very minimum amount of effort. Which means you will handle it very lightly and almost automatically.
2. Make A Decision That Leaves You No Option
“I feel like starting a business.” OR “I feel like writing. For me, I think this is worth pursuing. I’m sure there are lots of resources out there that I can use. If I become mentally and financially equipped maybe I should give it a try.”
There is a major difference between a person who will choose to take action base on how their current environment works, from the ones who will take action base on what he believes was right for him.
The dialogue above seems ordinary but these are common for those who are waiting for ‘BIG BREAK’, overly preparing, collecting tools and resources before starting, waiting to be the ‘right person’ before even trying. Without realizing they grew old and waste tons of opportunities while waiting.
“Whatever your purpose is that leads you to the point of no return, that’s where you go.” — BJ the Chicago Kid
Make a decision, enter the ‘point of no return’. INVEST with yourself.
The proof you are not yet decided is because you haven’t made any investment. You are on the state of contemplating your ‘dream project’ or your ‘dream self’ same as how you contemplate 5 years ago.
There is a clear explanation how ‘point of no return’ works, defined by my dear mentor Benjamin Hardy:
“The Point of No Return.” This is the moment it becomes easier to move toward your goals than to avoid them. Actually, it’s the instant that pursuing your highest ambitions becomes your only option.
In many cases, the point of no return experience was the moment the individual actually believed they couldn’t go back.
Once you’ve passed your point of no return, you’ve fully bought into your own vision. You’re committed. Your role, and thus identity, change. You’ve removed alternatives that were nothing more than distractions anyways. You’ve forced your own hand and now must move in the direction you want to go. You’re all in.
Investments will be your point of no return.
Investing is not just input— in most cases you don’t need to add more, instead you need to give up something. Because if you already gave up something, there will be an urgency for you to put up effort to take action not to waste what you gave up or in this case what you’ve invested. The more you invested, the more you are willing to move.
Investment on time and money.
Give up TIME — Start with little time. Writing on my journal 10 minutes every morning was the shortest but I consider the best investment I made in my life. Carve time to practice, cultivate, nourished your mind through learning, imagining, acting yourself you are that person you want to become already.
“The purpose of learning is growth, and our minds, unlike our bodies, can continue growing as we continue to live.” — Mortimer Adler
Treat reading as necessary. We’re not growing only by eating we are not trees. Human should grow by improving. We should read, learn from experiences, produce and do something valuable while on Earth.
Consider investing time doing things that you love as a keystone habit. It will demand the next decision you will make and eventually you’ll see results faster than you can imagine.
Give up MONEY— You should be willing to pay the price. Don’t think it’s a waste of money improving yourself from person A to person B. Yes we have billions of resources on hand to google every question in our head, but those who achieved were the ones who ask from experts and didn’t wait before they’re ready.
Never think that your own improvement is too expensive for you. Your willingness to invest and spend time cultivating yourself should be more than your willingness to take risk of your future.
Breakaway from options. Cut the rope. Stop collecting backup plan. If you cut the rope throw the other one immediately. You’ll eventually discover out the next steps on moving, and it’s always figurable. Set no option to go back.
The next rule number 3 is what I consider the most preeminent among the rest, so you better not skip it. Very cheap but considered to be the most powerful tool of success.
3. Have A Tool For Your Forgetful Mind
When your deepest reason started to solidify, and you start cutting away options. It’s time for you to have a tool for your forgetful mind. Because without your control — your mind will keep on forgetting your deepest reason of doing.
Without a daily cue, it’s gone.
Our body should take daily actions if we are serious of what we are trying to pursue. We need the simplest tool to help us remember it. Not just a simple note-taking or post-it notes to put on your wall. I swear it will not help you remember things. What you need is to journal it.
Make a systematic journaling process. If you are unsure how to do it — see this 9-steps guide that I specially designed. It will help you move and be engaged with your goal daily. You can download it FREE here.
You have to start with a system. A system that will trigger repetition. Journaling is like a string tied to your finger, it makes you not forget. You will never treat your target goal the same again after you try the right way of journaling.
Reminding yourself is a huge key to start and make you stick, but without the last one the possibility of losing motivation is again anticipated.
4. See Your 80 Year Old Self A FINISHER
This is the time you will re-envision yourself. Not a future old person with projections that are foggy, but a person with crystal clear accomplishments.
Remember accomplishment is NOT just:
- big retirement benefits
- savings (after long years of hard work )
- big family and grandchildren
- physical things, such as house, and assets
Those are all external accomplishments, meaning it focuses more on physical achievements that we wish to have most of our time. Experiences are far more memorable than things.
It has to be more on INTERNAL, something that you’ll share outward and is more valuable than physical things. These are:
- being a true craftsman, after countless of hours of practice of your expertise
- compiled life observations
- places you’ve seen or visited
- culture you interact with
- considered yourself rich compare to any younger individual in terms of memories of how you saw Earth changed decade by decade
also much important legacies such as:
- your creation
- valuable contributions, these are the wisdom, and the values you’ve shared around you
- people you inspired and connected with
- life you produce (your family values)
- countless meaningful time spent with your love ones
That old person in your mind is the one who pursued his deepest reason of doing. He who omit all options and did what is truly meaningful to him. A person who discovered the right tools and keeps on learning with all his might.
Sometimes we need to look on the big picture to establish unshakable motivation. A kind of motivation with strength that no any physical and internal influence could break.
It all starts from discovering your deepest reason. Why do you really want to achieve that goal? Start to analyze yourself, ask WHY many times up to the core. Your deepest reason is not just meant for a unique you, it is a gift specifically made for you. Open it.
Investment is not just giving up your hard earned money but also giving up your hard earned time. Stop believing we have all the time in the world. We only have minimum of 14 hours awake time, we only have today. Curve time to do your meaningful goal. That’s hard earned!
There’s always the best tool to remember your goal every day, by writing and reviewing it daily.
And finally you can’t imagine your old self still hoping - but a fully accomplished one.
